Awesome videos Jupiter2! Your 1100 line Werewolf is in gorgeous condition. I love the back story of the magic shop and haunted house experience with your original copy. Congrats on scoring a replacement. Man, what a blast that must have been to crack open all those boxes of masks as they arrived at the magic shop. Sounds like a dream job!

Hoping to see some contributions to this thread. I'll snap a few shots myself and add on.

'Fun vids and great topic, jupiter2.

I've told my tale before but since you've chosen to call this "Collection Corner",
I am compelled to spotlight the most fateful corner of my mask collecting life ~

^ It may not look like much anymore, just an empty corner near the ceiling of
Disneyland's magic shop. Back in the 1960s, the first custom DP mask I ever
had once lurked in that corner.

During family visits to Disneyland I could've spent the entire day just watching
that expensive mask dangle over me, taunting me, out of reach in every
conceivable way.

Many months were to pass before Dad finally gave in to my incessant pleas
and bought it for me. For the next ten years we were inseparable best buddies ...
me and the mask, that is ~

It even accompanied me to school on several occasions!

I eventually wore it to death and "retired" it in solemn ceremony but even now
you will still see a DP MUMMY mask hanging in a high corner of my monster room
to honor that cherished memory from childhood ~

Walt Disney was once quoted as saying "it was all started by a mouse".
In my case, it all started with a MUMMY mask. Without it, this Maskahuna
might be a mere menehune today.

Maskahuna, that Mummy is an absolute treasure! Having acquired it in the 60's, is it safe to say that it is of "calendar" vintage? If so, it has to be one of the few remaining masks that have survived from that era.

Post by: Gory Glenn on February 26, 2017, 11:05:04 PM
While I just did a post on these recently they are 2 of my very favorite pieces. After admiring them in the background of Dr. Lady's videos it was my mission to somehow score the Carol Hicks Christopher Lee Frankenstein's Monster and Mummy masks. Took a few years before I had them both but I'm very happy that they are finally in my collection.

The corner MUMMY in my monster room now is just a badly rusted reissue.
I buried my "Calendar" original in the backyard forty years ago, but the magic
mummy mystery didn't end there ... a few years later, I made the mistake of
showing someone "of questionable repute" where I'd buried it. Shortly afterwards,
the grave was robbed!

Since we're on a roll with Mummies here are my Don Post Mummy A & B re-issues.

(http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah232/Glenn_Burtis/Mummy%20A%20amp%20B_zpsz3hhecp6.jpg?1488309476856&1488309486494&1488309486851&1488309487225)(http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah232/Glenn_Burtis/Mummy%20A%20Front_zpsxifk4zes.jpg?1488309487235&1488309496046&1488309497167)(http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah232/Glenn_Burtis/New%20Mummy%20B%201%20800X450_zps3ensevsd.jpg?1488309497179)

I purchased Mummy A at Don-Con from Ron Chaney so I had both Ron and Don Post Jr. sign him.

(http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah232/Glenn_Burtis/Mummy%20A%20Chaney%20Sig_zpsbvx7druq.jpg?1488310227628&1488310243097&1488310245327&1488310246457&1488310266921)(http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah232/Glenn_Burtis/Mummy%20A%20Post%20Sig_zpsy8tukmnb.jpg?1488309487234&1488309496045&1488309497166)

And here's a photo that led a few collecttors to think that Mummy B was a Crayon yellow color. Maskahuna and I had a discussion about this photo. Mummy B was originally a fullers earth color but so many copies are rusted that it was hard to tell. The photo scan in question just had bad color reproduction.

Thanks Pete! Every mask Ron had at Don-Con was like that, not a speck of rust. Makes me wonder if the way they were stored is why. Every mask was in a plastic bag and garage stored so no sunlight.

Fun video jupiter2! The Topstone Mummy was one of my childhood favorites. I still remember going into Thrifty Drug Stores and sifting through the bin of masks and picking him out. And being a kid that had a fifty cent a week allowance buying a latex mask felt like such a step up from the vacuform masks that were the only other type of masks I could afford in those days.

'Fun review of those two great SKULL masks, jupiter2.
I used to see Randotti skulls in the same shops as Don
Post masks so that Veridian reminds me of a wearable
version.

One of our TV stations has been running the original
Planet of the Apes movie series lately. Watching
Beneath the P.o.t.A. again brought back
memories of a mask I had in the early 1980s.
It's called Albina Mutation, cast from the
movie mold ~

Great display! Love that "Asylum of Horrors" sign. I remember seeing advertisements for shows like this when I was a kid. I did a quick search and found this link.

http://the-gossip-columnist-6.blogspot.com/

Here an excerpt from it. Sounds like fun to me!  ;D

Quote
But, the most interesting and fun show was "Dr. Silkini's Asylum of Horrors." They used the Frankenstein monster in the show and in those days that was scary. It was a campy show that used people from the audience for a major part of the show. Then, toward the end, they would wheel out a hospital stretcher with the "monster" on it, and thunder and lightning would fill the theater. Then the monster would rise from the stretcher, and after cutting off someone's head, he would walk off the stage into the audience, with the bleeding head under his arms. The theater would then go black and ghosts could be seen floating around in the air. (It was fluorescent sheets, hanging from fishing poles and waved back and forth from the stage). I was only twelve years old and it really scared me. Jack Wyman was the actor's name who played the monster. I got his autograph backstage afterwards and he signed it, "Til redder blood flows," - Jack Wyman.

Alas, Specter went out of business about 6 years ago.

Nice job on that Specter Studios Buzz mask Doh!. Looks great! I picked up their Frankenstein and Mummy masks some time back. Like you said, unfortunately they are no longer in business.

Thanks Doh! Yeah, the Mummy is the one most people prefer including myself. Frankie could look better with a little more paint detail on the eyes. Right now they're just white including the iris which should be a different color. I may do that myself if I can decide on a color.  ;D

Really nice scarecrow jupiter2! As you mentioned I really like the tightly drawn skin on it and the hangman's noose. At least what I can tell from the video it has a more dried fleshy look rather than a burlap fabric texture like a traditional scarecrow. Depending on the time of day you shoot your videos you may want to consider an extra light source. It looks like the mask has more detail than what is visible here. Great mask! Thanks for sharing.

I want to thank Dr. Lady for helping me to rebuild my collection. I used to have a pretty solid mask collection until I remarried (I was a widower) and my new wife decided that she didn't like my collection. In the interests of "marital bliss" I sold all of my masks.

Flash forward to a month ago, she decided that she'd had enough and moved back to Michigan. I had seen the handwriting on the wall and was planning my return to the hobby. I love the classic monsters from the 30's - 50's and had them as a basis for my collection. I reached out to Dr. Lady and he has been working diligently to help me put my collection back on track. The first 2 pieces have arrived and I can't be more pleased. It! The Terror from Beyond Space has always been one of my favorite creature designs from the period, so naturally, he came first. The monster from I Married a Monster from Outer Space is an ionic creature as well. This scuplt is crazy!!

Dr. Lady still has a couple more creatures in the Lab for me and I can't wait to add them.

While losing my collection sucked, I have to say that hunting for new additions is very fun!

Great start to rebuilding your collection Tatooine_Todd! Love your 2 new pieces. And Dr. Lady, well what more can you say about him. Super great guy and friend of the mask collector. If there's one thing I've learned in my years on this earth it's if someone can't accept you for who you are and what you enjoy then they're not the one for you. Trying to change someone never works. Good luck going forward and enjoy the thrill of rebuilding your collection! :)

I consider Carol Hicks to be one of the masters of the craft. I was recently able to add these 2 pieces to my collection and I can't be happier.

Her Christopher Lee The Mummy is a thing of beauty. It perfectly captures not only the likeness of Lee as the monster, but also the malevolence. Say what you will as The Mummy as a threatening monster, Lee sold this role and his take was a ferocious killer that only Michael Myers could duplicate.

Her Hammer Frankenstein (also with Lee in the make-up) is a absolute piece of art. When I walk into my room, I can't help but stop and look at it. Simply fantastic!

Here's one of the earliest acquisitions in my collection. A Don Post "Franklin" that made his appearance in the early nineties. I believe he was in the '91, '92 and '93 Don Post catalogs. I always liked this guy for his brutish looks. You don't see this mask pop up very often. No slit up the back which I like but it's because this mask is so big it's not needed. I also like his big garish stitching as though the doc used leather strips instead of thread. But that's OK, Franklin's a tough guy.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4165/34647476356_10abe8812d_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4188/33845140034_2bfb722a3f_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4156/34525869652_3579777206_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4188/33845142624_555c12a86c_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4167/34647142346_509745f553_c.jpg)

He kind of reminded me of a cross between Frankenstein and Marv from Frank Millers Sin City.

One of the masks in my earlier collection that I really hated to see go was my copy of the The Hideous Sun Demon that I acquired from Dr. Lady about 10 years ago.

I consider the Sun Demon to be the 2nd best creature from the 50's Golden Age of Horror, right behind The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

On a chance, I reached out to Dr. Lady regarding this mask and he was able to come up with another one for me. I just got him back today!! His paint work on this mask is true art.

Fun video jupiter2! What amazes me is that you have these in perfect condition. Theses masks weren't made to last and I've seen so many of them in less than good condition. The Topstones were the ones we could all afford when we were kids so they hold a special place in our childhood memories for that reason. They were certainly a step up from the vacuform masks of the day. Thanks for sharing.

As mentioned in an earlier post I was able to score a sweet deal on a Night Owl Productions Shock Monster. I already owned the ToTS Shock Monster which was based on Justin's Night Owl sculpt but I jumped at the chance to get one hand made by Justin, signed and dated. Love the detail on this mask. The oozing wounds and the bulging right eye really sell it.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4276/34821508071_f1a9b6eaa2_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4225/34565802230_6695965eb3_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4224/34565808580_b9dda3fd59_c.jpg)(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4243/34142941313_30e51a3759_c.jpg)

And here he is side by side with the ToTS version. I think it's a testament to ToTS that the mass produced version looks this good.

I love monsters from the 50's. I was able to add one of my favorites, the Vampire girl from Blood of Dracula. i had contacted Dr. Lady about this piece and amazingly he was considering retiring the mold. He had just gotten an order for one and decided to cast a second to have a blank in case. He was able to jump on mine quickly and did a fantastic job on the paint and I assume Laura did the hair because it is amazing. This piece jumped up to one of my favorites in my collection.

I love monsters from the 50's.

'Fun score, Tatooine_Todd. Carol Hicks is a fine talent in the indie mask world.
Luckily for you, most of the characters she's sculpted were from the 1950s.

I happened upon this corner grouping in my photo files and thought it would
be perfect for jupiter2's thread. It depicts a small fraction of my collection in
the early '80s, mixing three "Calendar" classics with two Malonian masterpieces ~

That huge FRANKENSTEIN on the left was my all-purpose wearable casting.
'An old photo of it in the National Enquirer ~

'Another outing at a local horror convention ~

'Looks like some sort of product endorsement ~

The PHANTOM next to it never fit as comfortably and remained
my display copy. It had matching hands but back then I couldn't
devote enough shelf space to display them all with my hundreds of
masks ~

That Malonian CREATURE in the center was my best copy ever.
While mine, it only ever appeared alone in one lazily arranged
portrait. Such a custom paintjob certainly deserved better coverage ~

That old HUNCHBACK next to it has endured quite a few makeovers
in the decades since it was mine. I bought it retail in the mid 1970s.
At that time, it had the same swarthy complexion but its stock hair
was black with a patch of grey at one side ~

A few years later I yanked its original hair off, ran it back over to Post Studios,
and spent a fun couple of hours supervising as June Carnes applied new hair.
We must've selected and used at least four different fibre colors on it ~

'All hunched up and ready to party, Halloween 1984 ~

The COUNT on the right was one of my final scores of the 1970s,
a first edition casting. I really should have it still but am comforted
knowing it resides in a prominent New York collection today, along
with my former Malonian Creature ~

That's quite an amazing, literal "collection corner" Maskahuna!
Great pics!!

Well, if that's the case let's try for another go 'round!

'Same corner as before but different arrangement and over twenty years later ~

I've owned at least four Distortions Unlimited NIGHTMARE 1 masks
since 1980 but this is the only one I still have. We'll probably be
discussing Distortions quite a lot once Lee Lambert's new book
debuts at MaskFest this year ~

Next one over is The GALATEA GORILLA, a collaborative effort by
Kelly Mann and maskmaking legend Verne Langdon. It was released
in 2004 under their "Studio Quality Masks" label and depicts a hokey
carnival-style gorilla as might've been seen long ago in "Pepper's Ghost"
sideshow illusions ~

I've Showcased my MUMMY 5,000 BC mask previously but it's worth
mentioning again just how crazy cool it is to own a first edition copy
from 1976 and see it featured in last year's Don Post calendar ~

Next to it, another relic from the '70s: DP's "highbrow" PHANTOM.
I got plenty of wear out of this mask ... and it shows if you ever look
closely enough. Those are its matching hands on the shelf below.
It was my Halloween costume for 1988 ~

At far right is the DPS MR HYDE. It was in production years longer than
other DP/Universal Hyde masks, yet it's the rarest version nowadays ~

That tiki-looking thing at the bottom is the WITCHDOCTOR from
"Zombie Island", one of the best ever concepts for a mask series
in the humble opinion of this old jungle movie fan. I got it in 2004
along with several shrunken head props ~

I assembled costume elements around it later on and wore the ensemble
for Halloween that same year ~

'Am happy to report that I still own all six masks featured in tonight's post
although only one of them is still wearable.

One of my other passions is collecting screen used props and costumes. When my Mask Collecting world intersects with my Screen Used Collecting I get very excited.

I am a huge Babylon 5 fan. I consider it one of best (if not The best) sci-fi shows to have been on T.V. I recently acquired this Narn mask that was used as by a background actor in crowd scenes. I will also be adding, in a few months, a Drazi, and another alien mask from the show. The latex is in great shape considering the abuse it took on set.

solved one day.
'Fun vid on the Mummy, jupiter2; a great favorite of mine and surely one of

different subdivision within the mask collecting community. My collection

Heres a cool pic of the top of my comic book bookcase. The mask on the left is a Topstone production master (I think) that someone tried painting. This didn't work out too well, as you can see by all the little cracks. I got it off ebay in '06 (I believe) for $100. The only copy of this mask I've ever seen.
The one next to it is a Topstone Devil Skull painted by Rob Tharp. I drooled over this mask in Kevin Dobbs collection for years, so I was elated to be able to get it. This is actually the mask that got me back into collecting after I sold nearly everything several years ago to fund other projects.
Finally, Bridal Skull painted by VXX. One of the very first Topstones I ever got. Still my favorite paint job on this mask, with the black & purple veil.

I don't know anything about this mask. The seller I got it from was a guy, whose name I don't remember, that used to list a lot of neat and unusual monster stuff on ebay, usually toys. Occasionally he'd have some mask, sometimes even VXX Topstones. So, I think he listed it at more than I wanted to pay and we went back and forth a bit and eventually, I got for I think $80 or $100, somewhere around there. It doubtlessly came from the George L score but no one around these parts seems to know what it is. That's pretty much the totality of my knowledge about it. My guess is that when George sold a bunch of the Topstones from the warehouse this is one of the ones that found its way to someone outside the usual collecting circles. They tried their hand at painting, lost interest and sold it.
No one wanted it when I sold my collection several years ago and of course, now that I'm collecting again I'm glad they didn't.

Recent addition to the collection that I  thought I'd share. Verne Langdon Zombie, recast from an original (many of you are no doubt familiar with this mold) and painted/haired by Cathy Tharp. It has production style paint and hair. What I think is interesting is that it looks like Cathy took inspiration from Rudy's vintage copy (the only copy with its original hair) for the hair as it has a very similar look.

To my knowledge the Don Post Juice mask was not licensed by Iron Maiden in any way. Their mascot "Eddie" took on the look of what ever the theme of the current album was. The "Juice" version of Eddie was from their 1983 album "Piece of Mind" depicting Eddie as a lobotomy victim. In 1984 for their "Powerslave" album he took on the look of an Egyptian Pharaoh. Trick or Treat Studios has licensed the full line of Eddie Iron Maiden masks depicting him in all his themes throughout the years. They even have a full "Lobotomy Eddie" costume.

Thought I'd jump in now & then & post some of my collection. Most are Vxx masks but I have a few other masks left. This is a Don Post Alfred E. Neuman mask from I guess the early 60s. It was sold in the back of Famous Monsters. I don't think many were made & this is the only copy I've seen. It's large & had remnants of foam at the top of the mask & chin. Don Post Studios & what looks like No. Hollywood is hand written inside in ink. It's in a petrified state but in stable condition.

Glenn's right. They definitely weren't licensed. Anytime Don Post Studios grabbed a license, they displayed it loud and proud in their catalogs. At the time Juice showed up in the catalog, Iron Maiden was at their peak. If it was official, Juice probably would've had his own page with the Maiden logo plastered front and center. Official or not, it's still one of my favorite masks. As a Don Post fan, and a rabid Maiden fan.

On a side note, DPS weren't the only ones to do this. Forum Novelties took a crack at making an Eddie mask, with Metal Head.

'Fun vid, jupiter2. You mentioned the date-stamp on yours being "1981".
Although Jukebox wasn't catalogued until '85 it may have been designed
and copyrighted years earlier, around the time Syngenor was. There is
some conceptual connection between those characters. Wasn't Jukebox also
known as the "Titan's Find" alien?
I recall seeing an early prototype at DPS back then. It was ultimately released
as a "glow" mask but this sample paint scheme was my favorite ~

Interesting, Maskahuna. I actually had the below pic I was going to include in the video, but I couldn't definitively tie it in to anything Topstone. It looks pretty similar, but obviously not the same mask as you had. My guess would be maybe one of the West German knock-offs? But I hope someone can tell us for sure.

Thanks for the latest review, jupiter2. It's good to be reminded
once in a while that not all masks depict monsters. A real old
Santa Claus mask did turn up some years ago but I believe
it was a Don Post version, not Topstone's. There must be others
around, moldering in musty old basements somewhere out there.
I hope one in decent condition finds its way down your chimney,

It's the mask in the most deterioated condition, by far, in my collection. Yet, I think it may be the only one in collectors hands. I am sure there are unknown copies in countless attics and basements, but none that I could find photos of. I sure hope to see a nice copy in this thread!

Glenn, you should really jump on the Kong if they've lost the license. The promo photos don't do it justice -- it's actually a really good Kong likeness, specific to the 1933 movie.

Thanks Doh! and thanks for posting the video. Funny, there's a shot of the Mummy before paint right at the beginning of the video. Kind of interesting as mine is made out of black latex where the one in the video is not. The video is more about the person (business manager) than Specter Studios itself but still a rare look inside the companies facilities.

Here's a cool promo shot of "Buzz" and I believe it's the same girl in the pic. As she mentioned in the video she was in all the catalog shots.

Glenn, you should really jump on the Kong if they've lost the license. The promo photos don't do it justice -- it's actually a really good Kong likeness, specific to the 1933 movie.

I just grabbed one of these masks from TOTS and it's a great piece. I can't recommend it enough. If you're on the fence, take the plunge, you won't be disappointed. This guy is a big mask and the sculpt is spot on!

Yes, BSS/Zagone is known for their ability to do difficult sculpts like that without gluing the appendages on. Dr. Lady has mentioned that a couple of times in his reviews of their masks. Here's an extreme example of that.

I've owned the latex casting for quite some time but just got it finished
this month. It has a long history, dating back to the 1960s when
Verne Langdon was searching every makeup department in Hollywood
for a specific life mask to complete "The Don Post Private Collection" ~

The mask was also used to create the head of a life-sized DRACULA figure
to be installed at Hollywood's "Magic Castle" ~

Sinister Studios "Gein Grene" mask. The wig that came with it was pretty small, so I switched it out for the Rubie's version. I also added the leather laces myself. The mask came with black string all around it (pretty impressive that it was actually sewn together).

That Tharp edition looks great! As much as I love the original version, the red and black just feels right for the character. Definitive demon colors. The yellow in the eyes is also a nice touch. Kind of like one of my favorite DC characters, but with a reverse color scheme.

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies is a terrible movie. I think a lot of the cultural cache comes from the title, which is certainly one of the most insane titles for a film ever. It falls into a genre of film I call "Baffling & Boring". You spend half the time saying "wtf?" and half the time trying to stay awake.
If you like MST3K they did an episode featuring this movie, available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LcDG_tWipM.
The full movie is also available on Youtube here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZUQkFVieWI

The best photos of the original mask that I've been able to find can be seen here:
http://magiccarpetburn.blogspot.com/2008/10/incredibly-strange-creatures-fantastic.html

As for the mask itself, Darrell did an outstanding job with what I feel is a challenging subject. He captured the look of the movie makeup but also emphasized the most prominent details, such as the nose, missing eye and teeth. He also used a full wig for the hair and, as a result, this is one of the best haired masks I own. It really does approximate human hair. One of things that I love the most about all VXX masks is that they look and feel like masks. This one is cut to wear and I can easily get it over my head.

Great video jupiter2! Very informative. Very interesting to hear Chris's insight on how it all came about. I found it odd that Zagone had no interest in reissuing their classic masks but yet they're being made at their factory for ToTS. Seems like they were half way there already. I also like that they're reissuing "Drac" and the "'77 Sqaure Corpse Zombie". I wonder if those are from original molds as well. Anyway, great job jupiter2!

Hey Jupiter, since you were at Mask-Fest, I have a quick question. Were Dr. Lady and David Smith in attendance? YouTube is probably where they saw it as there are tons of ToTs reviews there. I don't get the impression ToTS spends much time on sites like this. I love the history that you include in your videos, jupiter! I have one of these as well, and the same with mine: shiny in front, no paint on the back. I still have the hat as well.

I actually think the Freddy likeness is quite good. As far as latex Kruegers go, I still think it's one of the best. I've since upgraded to silicone Freds, but this one will always have a special place in my heart.

Excellent vid, Jupiter! Though I have to disagree on one thing. Not only is this mask quite "appeeling", I still feel that it's the best mass-produced Freddy mask out there. Too bad they smoothed out the neck on later versions. The added detail of the tank parts was a nice touch. If memory serves, I almost purchased one of these back in the day from Famous Monsters because the Post Vader was "too expensive." I ended up getting the Post Vader -- and still have it!
Title: Re: COLLECTION CORNER!!

I get why you would want a copy with the original eye lenses but in all honesty the sunglasses lenses are probably better quality. Maskahuna's pic shows the cloudiness you mentioned quite clearly. When comparing the two the replacement lenses look better. Display wise I would be perfectly happy with what you have especially since you have a copy with the tank parts molded on it which looks better than the smooth neck version. This reminds me of the Rubies Van Helsing Frankenstein mask with the plastic skull cap. That mask isn't even that old and finding one that isn't cracked is difficult because the quality of the plastic just isn't that great.

Fun mask jupiter2. Near the end Don Post put out some crazy masks construction wise. I recently picked up a 2008 G. Howie Burns (bottom left page below, thanks Pete-I) that was part of their "Foam Faces" line. Like the Terminator mask it is a half mask but it is made of thick foam with a latex covering and plastic eye inserts. The back half being made of a nylon cloth hood with a netted wig on top of that. Your vacuform with latex on top reminded me of that odd joining of different materials. I'll post some pics of it when I have time. Enjoyed the video Jupiter2. As I've said before I like the variety of masks that you cover. Not everything has to be ultra rare and expensive to be fun.

Cool mask but there's hardly any difference between Mayhem Monster and the Shock Monster outside of the missing patch of flesh.

'True enough, Gory Glenn. "Mayhem Monster" makes no bones about
being a tribute mask.

Now, on to today's obscurity ~

The ALLOYTA by Savage Eye. I paid $39.98 for this long forgotten
character back in the 1970s and am fairly certain I'm the only one
amongst you who ever did ~

I know nothing about the concept behind it but there were two empty sockets
in its toothless upper lip which it appears were meant to accommodate tusks ~

Its accompanying hands are repurposed Savage Eye Creature hands,
painted to match ~

Paint ultimately proved the ALLOYTA's undoing: all were finished
in a gold tint which contains elements that react destructively with
latex rubber. It's unlikely that any gold originals survived into the '80s
so archive my pics. You probably won't see a Savage Eye ALLOYTA mask
anywhere else.

It's called POSSESSION ~

I've had this thing for decades. It was originally created back in
the 1970s by a fantasy artist named Rumph. The back view is
just as crazy as the front ~

Incredible mask 'huna! I love masks inspired by fantasy art, like the IL Castlehead mask. Rumph used to make fantasy pottery (you can't get much more specialized then that.)

He's probably best well known for these '77 Star Wars mugs

But looking at some of his other work you can see his horror influences. This ogre and Scrooge look a bit familiar...

I love that mask 'huna! Rumph not only made masks and mugs but smoking apparatus too. I actually owned the Wizard second from left many years ago. Had no idea who made it until now. He was almost stranded in Mexico once but I was able to rescue him at the last minute. The details of that crazy story are for another time.  ;D Love the posts guys!

Thought I would add one more Creature Revenge mask to the corner before we shut down. One of my favorite Vincent Price roles and just a very cool character "The Abominable Dr. Phibes"

Greg at Creature Revenge Studios has decided to take a break from latex masks to pursue other projects so he had a sale of remaining inventory. Only 1 Phibes mask was available and I was lucky enough to score him. I think it's a great likeness. Thanks for looking.

Nice video, jupiter! I'm actually a big fan of the movie, but never picked up the pumpkin mask. I do have a skull -- but an earlier copy, not the glowing one from the movie release.

I was contemplating getting a TOTS pumpkin, but I saw one in person and it somehow seems off to me. Too small, or the paint isn't as nicely done as the Post. Something...

Here's another mask I've never featured before, so rare it's practically non-existent.
It's called Thebes Warrior, a Fantasy Faces offering from the late 1970s ~

Mike LeValley and Rick Stratton comprised Fantasy Faces Studio and usually
sculpted FFS characters together, one taking over after the other.

Thebes Warrior was originally conceived as wearing a battle helmet
which would've helped conceal its only debit: that buttertop split in its cranium.
I'll bet it would've looked great with applied hair too ~

Great choice for the vid, as well! The Tor Johnson mask is one of my favorites. Despite the incredibly simple design, it manages to be iconic and versatile. Kinda like the Don Post Skull, I guess. I have a friend who's a DJ, and this mask even made an appearance in a video he made for one of his tracks. We still don't know what that segment is from!

Hey Glenn! Good to see you back in the mix again!

You might have solved a mystery for me Another Symbiote. I was looking at this Tor mask on eBay that claims it's made from the original DPS foam master. I wasn't sure about it because it didn't look like the DPS Tor mask I was used to seeing with the scar. After seeing the pic you posted I'm inclined to believe that it is this '94 sculpt. I really like the paint scheme on this one as it looks like Tor coming out of the grave from "Plan 9 from Outer Space".

Yeah, that guy on ebay is legit. He bought foam masters for three of the classic DP Tors back in 2012 when the entire legacy of DP was cast to the 4 winds. I bought a Pat Newman Tor off him and its pretty nice for the price. Clean pull, long neck, eyes and mouth untrimmed. The paint is not "Tharp quality" but your getting a good mask. Worth the money. I plan to buy his other Tors as well.

I remember this one issue of Fangoria from 1994, that had an article on Ed Wood(to coincide with the movie). There was a little interview with Ed Woods ex(the one played by Sarah Jessica Parker, I think), in which she jokingly recalled Tor Johnson breaking the toilet seat just by sitting on it when he would visit. She also mentioned that despite the fact that he was this big, scary pro wrestler, he was basically a giant teddy bear. A lot like Vader in that respect, I guess.

Glenn, is the TOTS version somewhat small? I can wear my Skull--but just. Granted, I have a Bullwinkle-sized head (I literally take a 7 1/2 hat!).

My TOTS skull ripped past the very small hole when I tried it on and I think I have a normal size noggin.

I have a size 7 1/2 hat size too so it would be too small for me to wear. Even when I was stuffing it I had to be careful about the slit because the opening is small. Never really considered that issue since I only use it for display. There was a post on Amazon regarding this mask asking how long the slit is supposed to be. I told them about the "keyhole" at the end of the slit so if the slit goes beyond the keyhole you know it's been torn. They replied and said thanks for the info and confirmed that theirs had been torn beyond that point. So along with Kidagain's comment it sounds like this is an issue.

I had a Batman cowl about 20 years ago that also ripped beyond its intended slit. It was a pretty good mask, too -- the back had a velcro closure. I did keep it long after it ripped, but never wore it again for fear of an even bigger rip.

For the Bullwinkle in all of us:

Congrats on another great vid, jupiter! Great choice of subject matter. It is kind of disappointing to hear about the size though. I have a fairly big head AND thick hair, so I definitely need masks to be on the roomy side.

Huna, those are two fantastic examples of maskery! I'm especially liking that Count Orlok mask. Then again, he's my favorite classic monster, so I'm a bit biased.

Nice witches guys! One of these days I'll pick up the H3 Witch and Pumpkin from ToTS to complete my set. I'm just not willing to shell out what people are asking for the 2012 DP masks and really lets be honest all you're paying for is the DP name on that vinyl set. The ToTS masks are just as nice if not nicer. Yeah, I know blasphemy!  :o

One mask that kind of sneaked in the back door from the new 2018 ToTS line up from a grindhouse style movie was the Blood Beast from Beast of Blood which was the 3rd and final movie of the Blood Island Trilogy, an obscure set of movies made in the Philippines. You can read more about them here:

http://www.fantasyliterature.com/reviews/the-blood-island-trilogy/

This is a great mask of an obscure character and I applaud ToTS for making it. This is a mask made for fans by fans. I love the aesthetics of this mask. Definitely on my "to get" list when it's released.

Yours is a terrific copy, jupiter. Even though it was towards the end of the DP run, the latex appears to be holding up.

Fun story: when they released the director's cut of Donnie Darko in 2004, I went to go see it in the theater. Because I really like the music over the end credits, I stayed until the lights came back on. Sitting two rows in front of me was... Frank the Bunny (well, the actor who played him in any event). He was immediately recognized and stuck around for several minutes to answer fans' questions. I love L.A.!

Is was a thrill for me to see a screenshot of my very first Collection Corner video featuring the Don Post 1102 Werewolf at the 7:02 mark in this first Distortions video!
I know it's a small thing, but it was a surprise, and a delight to see that!

later. I believe the first new test pull from the old mold was cast

I never paid TrenchMouth any mind either but these obscure characters always seem to
move up a notch in my estimation after jupiter2 reviews them. That he's even able to
find copies for sale is mask magic itself! It's a good scary design but if it's humanoid
there should be some trace of a nose, if only skeletal. However I do dig its little deformed
ear. 'Something I always enjoyed about Don Post masks: you could pull back the hair and
often find disturbing little sculptural details otherwise hidden from view.

what looks to be a thumbprint. They even thought enough of my copy to use shots

Newest addition to the collection, and just back from a visit to the great Maskahuna for a life sustaining fillin' of foam, a rare circa 1980-82 Don Post "The Count". First of the 2 "generic" Lugosi masks, and only in production for 3 years, this mask seems to often be overlooked.  This can probably be partly attributed too its brief production run but  mostly to it having the misfortune of being the 1st Drac mask after Pat Newman's masterful Calendar Lugosi (at bit like following the Beatles on stage) and coming just before Pat Newman's last pass at the character, the late '80s "Moonfan".
