JOE READER/HOUSE OF HORROR STUDIOS
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:00:33 PM »
Does anyone know what happened with Joe Reader and House of Horror Studios? This company is actually what started my interest in mask collecting in the 1980's and he had such awesome monsters and props. You never see any of his stuff offered for sale from collectors and I often wonder if certain pieces were ever actually made (like his deluxe Werewolf and Fly). If anyone has any of Joe's stuff I would love to see pics. Also, if you have them, and are willing to part with them, let me know!

I'd also love to know what Joe's up to these days. If anyone can point him in the direction of the HMA, it would be much appreciated.

Take care,

E.A.

I drool over his catalog pics everyday on this site. I've never seen any pop up anywhere.

It amazes me, that with the quality of Joe's stuff, that no one seems to have any! I would love to get copies of both versions of The Fly and his deluxe Werewolf. Obviously some of the molds must still exist since Death Studios offered Bugg with a greatly simplified paintjob.

Here are the two pieces I have now. First up is some kind of alien creature (I cannot remember the name). The paintjob on this is incredible and it shows how a mask company should be...producing pieces that look EXACTLY like the catalog pics.

Next up is one of my alltime favorite pieces, Old Bob. This was actually produced as both a mask and a puppet (this of course is the puppet). I have since had it foam filled with acrylic teeth added.

As a side note, Joe ended up discontinuing this design in favor of, in my opinion, an inferior sculpt, that actually was more realistic looking but lacked the charm of this piece.

Last I heard, Joe was doing some special makeup effects work...I think Maskahuna would have more info on what ever happened to him.
