Hollywood Halloween Showcase ~ The Spectre
« on: January 26, 2014, 10:06:46 PM »

As if not creepy enough in stock production paint, The Spectre
was also marketed as a glow-in-the-dark mask ~

Readers of old monster magazines probably recognize it as
the horrific ghoul interpreted by Ron Cobb in cover art from 1966 ~

I still haven't found out whatever became of Hollywood Halloween Company
under the leadership of its president Dean Jones. However, I did catch up with artist
Kelly Mann who paused a moment from his always scary schedule to discuss this
frightful face he sculpted back in the late 1990s ~

"The creation of what I called the 'Horror Hotel' mask began in a brain-storming session
about what masks would be in the line-up for Hollywood Halloween's first year of production.
We had not yet set up our mask production studio so we were sculpting in Dean's dining room.
I had always had a fascination with 'that' face on the cover of Famous Monsters #40.
Since it was really cool artwork and it never appears in the movie 'Horror Hotel', I thought
it'd make a good mask. When we'd moved into the Castaic Industrial park and set up sculpting
tables, the first face I wanted to make was that hideous 'Horror Hotel' visage. I found out quickly
that I had to make some concessions on the design: since the mouth was open I couldn't have
it recede too much; I added a tongue to displace the area where the wearer's chin would be.
I also decided that it should be a 3/4 mask since FM's cover art doesn't show a neck and I
had to add a bit to the top of the head to fit 'real people'. "

By daylight, the luminous version of The Spectre presents itself
as a pre-stained invitation for custom finishing by independent
mask artists ~

Some have accepted the challenge and
offered up their own takes on the character ~

VXXFX was the perfect choice to customize
this copy for an east coast collector ~

I personally think The Spectre is way too cool a ghoul to
lay moldering in obscurity. If you have one, or either of
those two horrendous dead heads in the series, I want to
see them ... whether custom or factory finished ~

Another great "Showcase", Huna! It's a shame that H.H. folded so quickly, since they had to much talent on board. I would have to say the most notable H.H. mask was their take on The Elephant Man, though I find The Spectre to be just a smidge cooler. I'm fortunate enough to own a Spectre mask, but I wish it would have been cast a tad thicker.

Here's a photo of my Spectre.

Here are my three...glow, master, and production painted copies:

I also liked how the Ron Cobb artwork from FM #40 made its way onto Electric Lemon's Halloween Spooktacular album cover:

Just to help round out the thread, here are a few of the Horror Hotel posters that are mentioned in Huna's post:

Great stuff as always Maskahuna. I had no idea this mask was called "The Spectre", and until about two years ago, I never knew of Hollywood Halloween. It's cool to see The Spectre along with with the rest of the HH line-up.

The Spectre was without a doubt the steal of the show at Monsterpalooza a few years ago. There was a booth selling old copies for five bucks a piece. A handful of collectors were lucky enough to get a copy of the glow and non-glow versions before they sold out. You could easily see who was a mask collector at the show if they were walking around the convention with a Spectre.

Here are the two I picked up...

I don't have the glow version any longer, Lblambert made off with it this past Maskfest ;)

I repainted my non-glow version last year...

Another noteworthy version of this Horror Hotel / FM Cover character is the Death Studios "Mad Ghoul" released in 2011, and still in the DS line-up...

Great mask, I too had a glow one and regular one and wish I didn't sell it off.  I got it for a really, really cheap price too.  I'm a dummy.

Maskahuna already posted my glow copy (taken outside with the trees in the background).
