DPS Showcase ~ CAPT KIRK
« on: November 18, 2016, 01:53:27 AM »
It was inevitable. I've delayed Showcasing this Don Post mask longer than need be.
Since Mr Spock has already been covered it's only proper that his commanding officer
get equal time, taking into account the legend that has developed around the original
CAPT KIRK masks ~

1976, the end of an era at Post Studios: the Universal Monsters were being
phased out and the creative team of Bill Malone and Bob Short were "auditioning"
other licensed characters for DP's custom lines ~

That same year, I brought home their first edition CAPT KIRK mask.
Retail price back then was only $29.95 ~

It was a thinly cast tight-fitting little mask (there's a photo of me wearing it
at and several months of pulling it on and off my head
virtually destroyed it. I needed another but by then they were getting hard to find ~

Around the same time, I met fellow DP enthusiast MaskGuy and we
became fast friends. He also had a CAPT KIRK in his collection ~

Guy was operating a fun party service called "Characters Unlimited"
through which he would appear in various costumes at your social events,
even as CAPT KIRK ~

During a weekend visit, we strolled into a local novelty shop in his neighborhood
and way up on their sale shelf was a CAPT KIRK. I promptly purchased it for $39.98 ~

During this time, John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) was setting box office records
across the country. A source close to Post Studios recalls when the movie's producers
initially  " ... came by looking for a clown mask to buy. Emmett and Felix were both
too recognizable so Bill made them a 'mime-type' mask from the Kirk. They offered
Don $500 or a percentage of the film. Don took the money ..."

In all my years of collecting, I've only owned one SHAPE mask. Around 1980,
Don Post reached into a box of them (while saying "Have you ever heard of
Henry Weinhard's private stock?") and presented it to me ~

Of course I had to take it over to MaskGuy and let him try it on ~

Over the years production of "The Shape" mask has led to rounds of litigation
between Compass International Pictures and Post Studios, both claiming rights
to the character. Meanwhile, two additional "pseudo-KIRK" masks were
marketed in the 1990s ~

Former DP designer Eric Yeager attests they were created " ... as exhibits for
the lawyers ... and products, of course. One of those was sculpted by me; I
think the 'eyes-cut-out' one was. The one with eyes was probably a scan (using
the 'Calendar' reissue method) which is why the jaw is somewhat reduced. The
example scanned was an undersized production copy. The undersized jaw was
thus codified.

I believe they were the last KIRK masks to emerge from DPS.

You're now invited to reply with images of your Shatner/Shape masks.
If this character doesn't wake up the membership around here, nothing will!

Alas, I have no Kirks to post, but I love your photos, Mask!

Truth be told, the original DP version was a really good likeness of Shatner. I hope that the pending TOTS one does it justice.

Great article!!
I remember a member on another forum who owned one of them early mystery shape masks only to be accused of being liar by a well known guy here. Proves he wasn't lying at all.
Glad you cleared this up!

Just imagine what Halloween would have been like if they had used one of the later "recreations" of the Myers mask instead of a retooled original Kirk, LOL. ;)

Original DPS 1975 Spock ( only brown hair copy) next to the 1975 Captain Kirk replica ( “Final Frontier” sculpted by Nick Mulpagano )
