Masks gone batty
« on: December 22, 2016, 05:05:27 PM »
Have you ever taken a closeup look at an actual bat?

Most are tiny little creatures, which is just as well since
they're scary-looking as werewolves!

A recent comment from one of our newer members here has inspired me
to review notable "bat" masks from a few of our favorite artists:

Of course, the ultimate bat monster will always be "the fire demon"
from Columbia's 1957 horror classic ~

The character has been recreated in mask form
several times over the years ~

The earliest commercially available "bat" mask I'm aware of
was created by Ellis Burman for his custom line that probably
inspired all high-end masks which followed in the 1960s ~

Distortions Unlimited flew in with NOCTURNAL in the early 1980s ~

Stroke of Midnight debuted The BAT in their own mask line
and later released it through Death Studios ~

This fanged horror also emerged from Death Studios
but I only ever knew it from catalogue photos ~

Nor do I recall seeing a copy of this one, marketed by Dynamic Design
International, and am not even sure whether it was a wearable mask or
a Halloween prop ~

Dominick Alvarez designed the BANSHEE which came roaring to life
through his father's waxworks factory ~

Alvarez Wax Models also created three amazing masks based on 1992's
Bram Stoker's Dracula, one of which clearly features a bat-like countenance ~

Have I left out any of your favorites? This quickie post of mine
can hardly be considered "definitive". If you have any bats in
your belfry, flush them out and into this thread.

I love seeing all of these great masks Huna!  I think I'm starting to go batty myself! ;)

I believe there was a mask called "Vampire Bat" done by BSS.  You can see the mask in the upper left hand corner of this catalog page scan.  It's not really one of my favorites, but I thought I would include it for sake of completion.

Neat post, Maskahuna! I've always had a fascination with bat-like monsters. One of the earliest examples was seeing Batman face off with the Man-Bat on Batman: The Animated Series, back in the early 90's.

As for masks, that SoM Bat is one of the coolest things this side of Carlsbad Caverns. My favorite though, would have to be the Gruesome Bat by Illusive Concepts.

Actually, the guy who made my Batman (Shawn Reevz) also made a terrific Man-Bat:

Wow, that's a pretty sweet mask. I wonder if there are any other takes on the Man-Bat out there?

Found another one that Illusive Concepts did, but this one's from 1998. It's sort of a proto version of the Gruesome Bat, and honestly, every bit as cool.

That's just the photo. It's actually black -- strikes fear in the hearts of evil-doers, don't you know...

Managed to dig up yet another notable bat mask. This one's from American Mask & Novelty, and has a couple of pretty sweet color options.

Back again, with one more bat mask. This time, from Disguise Incs 1997 Fright Asylum line, which is a personal favorite. This Vampire Bat looks remarkably accurate when compared to an actual bat.

I thought it was time to dust off the cobwebs, and let the bats back in the belfry. Next up...Topstone! They may only have two offerings in this area, but at least they each got different colors...

...one of which is particularly...loud.

While I'm at it, here's one from Distortions Unlimited that seemed to fly under my radar. It's listed as a new product in the '91 catalog, but is nowhere to be found by '94. Meaning it had 3 years at most, but I don't know how long it was actually on the market.

As a bonus, here's a couple of my favorite Distortions props to beef up this post. The Hanging Vampire and Crawling Vampire!
