"D" for Disgusting
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:44:43 PM »
Most horror fans and collectors I know have pretty strong stomachs,
developed from years of exposure to hideous and gory imagery. My
own mask collecting preferences have mellowed, relatively speaking,
with age but I still have old catalogues depicting some horrendously
sickening characters. Oddly enough, the companies who made them
all have names beginning with the letter "D" ... for Disgusting!

Dreadful Death Studios still offers this repulsive John Smith creation
from decades ago ~

Whatever infection he has, I certainly wouldn't want to contract it myself!

The closest I ever came to INFECTED was a copy on display at a carnival
makeup booth ~

Can you make it out there, on the bottom row?

Without question the most horrifically gory masks and props in the industry
began to ooze out of disturbing Distortions Unlimited in the 1980s ~

If these don't gross you out big time, you're either a medical examiner
or blind as a bat!

I don't happen to have a catalogue image on HACK but I consider this
trio a three-way tie for tops in extreme costuming carnage ~

The character of "Dorian Gray" invariably lends itself to loathsome interpretation
but diabolical David Ayres Studio released a version in 1980 that made me go
BLEEAKH at first sight ~

The design incorporated a few features of other infamous DORIANs but its profile
was like nothing I'd ever seen back then ~

Once your digestion settles, start assembling images of your candidates for
most vile and revolting masks ever produced. Make us gasp, make us groan,
make us hurl ... and we'll pat you on the back for a job well done!

Awesome thread Huna!  Wow what eye candy at that carnival booth.....whoaaaaaa!  Infected is a super cool mask;  I am not grossed out by anything as when you do orthopedic surgery for a living and you saw bones, etc, you see some really nasty stuff lol!  I always thought the Distortions Nightmare series fit this thread?  Here are some pics of the Distortions Unlimited Nightmare 3,4 and 5!  Great thread again!!!

D is for Disgusting and G is for Gory.  ;) Fun post Maskahuna. A favorite topic of mine. Was a big fan of the film genre that became known as Splatter films that started in the 70's. So here are a few of my gory pieces. From left to right we have Trick or Treat Studios Distortions Collection reissue of Blasted. This must have been made from an original mold or foam master as it has the original Distortions markings molded on the back. After that is Putrid by Ghoulish Productions. They kind of overdid it with the blood on mine as I've seen other copies where the teeth are more visible and it looks better that way but a cool mask none the less and hard to find these days. And then there's Bump in the Night Productions Dr. Tongue from George Romero's Day of the Dead.

Greg Nicotero likes to sneak a classic zombie into episodes of The Walking Dead. Second episode of season 7 Dr. Tongue had a quick cameo. If you blinked you'd miss him.

My humble contribution: Slackjaw!

Silicone mask from CFX. I added the glasses for Halloween.

I think this one qualifies as well: Deer Walker from TOTS -- Walking Dead collection. Wonderful sculpt and paint, but HUGE.

If I didn't have my mouth open, I think my jaw would only come down to about the mouth opening of the mask.

Definitely qualifies. I have one too and yes it's a big mask, almost Illusive Concepts big but not quite. Not many masks are IC big.  ;D

Great thread you've started here 'Huna. HOLY SMOKES that carnival makeup booth has some of the finest independent artist creations of the late 80's that one could ever hope to run into! A thread could be started just covering the masks on display there.  I used to own a Death Studios "Infected" mask, it was definitely not for the squeamish.

There is some Grade-A prime meat in this thread! Great pics guys. I don't have much in the way of gory masks other than a few Be Something Studios masks, which reminds me, I do have a Be Something mask titled "That's Disgusting". I'll have to post a pic of it here this weekend.

Easily the most disgusting mask in my collection is this gem from Justin Mabry. I picked it up from Justin at Maskfest a good three years ago now. It is his homage to the Collegeville Costume "Incredible Melting Man" vacuform mask, which the folks at Collegeville had obviously based on Dick Smith's Dorian Gray design.

Awesome Piece Pete! I immediately thought Dorian Gray before even reading your post. Justin's work is fantastic.

Has anyone ever done a screen accurate Incredible Melting Man?

Great thread, Maskahuna! Since Blasted and Nightmare have already made an appearance, I'll keep the Distortions action going with a couple of favorites....starting with Diseased. In all of his oozing glory.

Last but not least, we've got the Rotted Vampire, which might just be my number 1 pick from Distortions. I love that it takes the Christopher Lee-type Dracula, and adds a fresh coat of nastiness with the blood and boils.
