Mask Fan Library
« on: June 13, 2017, 04:22:55 PM »
I’d like to start an index thread of publications that ran mask related articles. Masks don’t get a lot of press, but occasionally a genre publication will run a piece about Halloween masks. Although they are few and far between I think they’re worth seeking out and there is some good stuff out there that the curious collector may find interesting. I’ll get us started…

Recent technical problems have taken some of the fun and
spontaneity out of replying so I'd best keep this short ...

'Great topic, Josh. Those were two fantastic issues!
Famous Monsters and Scary Monsters magazines
both deserve praise for their frequent mask-related
coverage. It would be a pretty ambitious project to
compile a thorough bibliography. Articles on the
subject are scattered far and wide but I have a
couple to contribute ~

Of course, I must put in a good word for the ol' Halloween Society ~

I've whitelisted two more rules the forum was triggering in the firewall.  Can you let me know if you still see the issue?

That '79 Starlog article is awesome! I think I'll try to track down the issue on ebay. The Freaky Monsters article is a reprint of the article that ran in Famous Monsters #224 when the Calendar Re-issues came out. I haven't checked out Ferry's Freaky Monsters mag but I'm  guessing he repurposes a lot of stuff from his stint on Famous Monsters. Love those Halloween Society fanzines. I've spent a lot of time on Eliot's site pouring over those scans!

Doh!

I don't really keep up with current monster mags. Certainly, Rue Morgue or Horrorhound has run a pieces on masks, right? Am I to believe that the triumphant rise of Trick or Treat and the dismal downfall of Don Post have gone undocumented in print?

The Monster Magazine World blog posted scans of an article about Verne Langdon that appeared in Famous Monsters #102 (October 1973) titled "Master of the Masks". This is a neat piece because it includes, among other things, a full page pic of a young Verne with a gorilla suit as well as a 1/2 page pic of Verne and Karloff. There's also incredible pics of Verne sculpting the Neaderthal Man and a full page pic of the finished mask!

The mask collecting world owes much to Verne Langdon. I'm willing to bet
he wrote "Master of the Masks" himself. He often wrote articles for FM under
pen names. I got in a debate once with someone over which mask came first:
Zombie or Neanderthal. That photo on page 46 settled the debate.

Has anyone ever compiled all of the Halloween Society issues in a single volume? I would love to own something like that. It good be done similar to how the recent Don Post book was done, and the upcoming Distortions book.
