Pat Newman's finest
« on: November 28, 2017, 03:31:44 PM »
I spent Thanksgiving weekend with local family, endless food
and drink, playful kids running through the house, and happy
new babies being too cute for words. It was all very traditional
and sentimental but it's over now and I'm ready to get back to
the subject of scary monster masks before the next holiday
season arrives to distract me.

If you were to ask today which of Pat Newman's mask sculptures
were her best work for Don Post Studios, I'd probably choose
these two ~

They were in production off and on for decades at DPS. Foam
masters on both can be seen in this amazing factory photo from
the late 1980s ~

I had scored my first copies nearly twenty years earlier. Although
these originals are long gone, I've never been without other copies
of them ever since ~

I'll be spotlighting both characters in separate posts over the next few days,
if my unpredictable image-hoster cooperates, so stay tuned. My posts will
depict them much more favorably than some of the old mask shops ever did!

Both of those masks are such fantastic classics !  Especially love seeing all of those foam masters together, what a tremendous sight to behold !

Looking forward to your upcoming spotlights.  Good luck with the image hoster !  Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Pat Newman's work was so great! I'd have to add her Glenn Strange Frankie to that line up as well. Do any of those foam masters still survive today?

Great post!

Lots of food for sure in the Italian household  8)

I have to agree, the Karloff sculpt defines Don Post Studios & everything I see in a vintage Halloween mask. I used to look through old threads when I was much younger & think one day it would amazing to have a collection & own one of those masks.
Proud to own the 98 calendar, 83, & 88 version of her beautiful Karloff works.

Have the reissue Karloff and love it but I agree with Glenn that Newman's Strange Frank needs to be in it too.

Thank You Huna Ė Those are two of my all-time favorite Pat Newman sculptures.  Her portrayal of the Karloff Frankenstein Monster is unrivaled.  Her ability to capture his unique likeness is still the finest done IMHO.  I have been in love with your Frankenstein and Phantom since I first saw them many years ago. The size, coloring, and detail is absolutely perfect! These two characters are true masterpieces created by Pat Newman and Don Post Studios.

I have to say that all the original characters she sculpted are yet today the most accurate and beautiful portrayals of the classic Universal Monsters.  Thanks for all the great information and photographs.  Here are a couple pictures of my masks and other photos Iíve saved through the years.  Iím looking forward to seeing more pictures of these two icons.

The more I look at Pat Newman's work, the more blown away I am by how incredibly gifted she was. Her ability to capture the essence of so many iconic characters is just astounding!
