Post Don Post Frankenstein Mask In The Box
This is the ad with photo from Elliot's site.

Image

This obviously isn't the same sculpt as shown, but it's the same style of box, the same era of box, it's an over the head mask...

Was this actually the mask that came in the Frankenstein box as well?

That looks like the version that Jim Warren wore on the cover of FM#1, but the version that came in the Frankenstein box had different electrodes. Doesn't mean it's impossible they slipped one in there, but they probably changed the box design (more versatile) before changing the mask that came in it.

Are there any pictures of someone wearing the mask shown in that wholesale ad, or are we certain that mask as it appears in that ad was actually ever produced?

As we know, ads usually are test shots mockups, while the actual item is sometimes very different. Look at the masks in Don Post ads vs what they actually sold. I realize the electrodes in the ad photo with the Frankenstein box are knobby, but if they were ripping off coming out of the mold or something, wouldn't they just fill that part of the mold in, and go with the shorter electrodes?

Like Aaron said, that is the same type of mask used on FM1 NOT the 1948 Frankenstein.

I did plan on bidding.............. :(

What is there to substantiate that the 1948 Frankenstein is different from this mask, other than that sales flyer?

Bob Burns is wearing the 48' Frank at the beginning of Lady's book.

As far as that goes, it has the terms Don Post Frankenstein Mask and Box in it. It's listed under Collectibles>Seasonal>Halloween>Masks as well as Toys>Monsters>Frankenstein. It's not something that is escaping notice by anyone interested in vintage Don Post stuff.

And I'm currently the 2nd bidder, and will be back after it later, so feel free to bid away but I really don't think starting this thread is giving it much more attention than it already was going to have, or as a bidder for it, I wouldn't have started it.

Just place a snipe on the mask.. early bidding does nothing but empty more and more of each of your pockets.

I have several old photos of the '48 Frank & it is a very different mask from the
one in the auction. Also it had layered hair as apposed to sculpted. The auction
mask is one I have studied quite closely in the past so I am familiar with it..

As far as posting open auctions, we can agree to disagree as the old saying goes....D

I wasn't trying to convince you of anything so much as to explain my thinking on posting this auction, so sure we can agree to disagree.

There are instances in the past when I've bought something and asked about it afterward, only to find out my original assessment was wrong. You have information and pictures, but I don't have that information or those pictures and the only way I can get the information is to ask. At the UMA, we have threads with extensive information on various rare toys, but at the HMA it's spotty at best, and people are often (but not always) reticent about sharing info and photos, besides that the search doesn't really work anymore. I'm not really complaining, just stating things as they are.

I'm watching that auction with curiosity, but I don't plan on bidding. It would be more at home in someone else's collection. But it's cool to see good photos of it from different angles. I hope the winner gets it properly restored and preserved.

Cool auction! I came across it the other day and said WOW! I love vintage masks, but I think the 70's-80's is where my heart is. I just can't get into paying high prices for the cheaper made, deteriorating masks like this. It has history and character, along w/ that cool box to boot though! If someone here is trying to snag it, best of luck. Hopefully a restoration is on the agenda. I think this is the first one I've seen on the bay.
